Frugal for Life recently wrote an article on Lessons Learned from the Depression and featured a photo from Shorpy. Curious I clicked on the link and have spent the last hour browsing the photos and reading the captions. Of course, I had known that times were tough during the depression but I truly had no idea how tough.

These are just two photos from 22 pages of similar ones. The first is of a family of 9 living in a one room shack in a field in Tennessee. The second is a family in Elm Grove, Ok. Both photos were taken in 1936. Clicking on the photos will take you to the full size version at Shorpy.

I think that I am going to ask my parents if they have pictures from that time. I know my mother has my grandmother’s photo albums. It should prove interesting. I think that when times get tough, I am going to take a look at these again and remember just how well off I am.

    That shorpy site is addictive!
I love the comments from people who do research on what places look like now or check backgrounds on people.

Dawn, it really is. I could spend hours just flipping through the pictures and reading. The Depression series really opened my eyes as while I ‘knew’ about it, I never really learned what it really meant, if that makes any sense. It’s something you just know about but you don’t really think about how it affected people.
