How can you tell that spring is almost here?  The daffodils are blooming in Virginia, I have started seeds for my herb garden, and Lynnae has published the Gardening Edition of the Money Hacks Carnival.

Frugal Dad has a great post on how to make a square foot garden.  This is a great way to grow your own vegetables in very limited space and save a ton on vegetables this summer.

If you would like more information on Square foot gardening you can check out Get Rich Slowly’s post on An Introduction to Square Foot Gardening.

I have started my herbs in paper cups.  I have oregano, thyme, basil and sage.  All but the basil are perennials so they will come back every year.  I will plant two of them and sell the rest for a couple dollars a cup.  This more than pays for the supplies that I used to plant them.

I hope to have a square foot garden this year as I have all the materials.  It’s assembling it that I need help with as I am absolutely NOT a carpenter.

Glad you enjoyed the Square Foot Garden article. I consider my carpentry skills average, to below average, so I’m sure you can pull it off. Fortunately, this one was pretty easy as I only had to make three or four cuts, including ripping the plywood bottom to size (the hardest of the cuts).

It’s the cutting that gets me. For some reason I cannot saw in a straight line and anything that I have ever tried to build ended up looking like the house that Jack built or the leaning tower of pizza.

What a great idea! I’ve wanted to start a garden for a few years, but I’m waiting until I have my own yard.

The good news is that you don’t have to wait. Square foot gardens are portable! You can make them on your deck or in a small space. All you need is 4 sq ft. I am going to make my kitchen garden 2 ft wide by 8 ft long. A sq foot is enough for 16 green bean plants or one tomato.
