Whether you cook a week in advance or a month in advance, cooking ahead or Once A Month Cooking can save both time and money.

  1. Buy in Bulk – This usually results in a savings of 10-20 cents per pound for meat.
  2. Take advantage of coupon savings by buying larger quantities of sale items. Plan your shopping trip around specials and below cost items
  3. Less temptation to eat out because you are too tired to cook.
  4. Package meals according to how much your family will consume in a meal. This eliminates waste, leftovers and overeating.
  5. Less frequent trips to the grocery store to buy last minute budget busting items.
  6. It’s convenient when you are tired or rushed to just grab dinner out of the freezer.
  7. Make cooking day a family affair. Kids are more likely to eat and like a meal when they helped prepare it.
  8. Clean up – You only have to clean the kitchen from food prep once instead of several times.

These are just a few of the ways that cooking ahead can save you time and money. Tomorrow I will have the recipes that I have chosen and the shopping list. Do you cook your meals ahead? How have you found that it works for you?

  1. I cook meals ahead and it so takes the stress out of cooking the family meal after work. Good tips! Looking forward to the recipes tomorrow :)

I try to have 1 cooking day a week. Also, since my husband isn’t picky and we have no kids I just make 2 or 3 dishes in bulk that we’ll eat over time. It helps, though, if I want to make 2 things each with a small amount of chicken or split an onion, etc. :)

I also love the convenience. It’s so easy to just heat things up again.

My problem is that it’s just me and so I don’t get very motivated to cook. If I don’t have something fairly quick to cook, I either eat junk or get tempted to go out.
