Making the Decision to Find a Job

I have decided that I am going to have to find a job.  While this would seem like a no brainer to most people, it pretty much means giving up any hope of continuing and growing my business.  While I would like to find a part time position close to home, there are very few if any opportunities available here.

It’s been a difficult decision as not only will it mean losing the time and money that I have invested but it also means letting down the people who have come to depend on me being open 6 days a week.  However, I have to be able to pay my bills and the business is not meeting the most basic needs of housing, food and heat.  I will have to manage it somehow and perhaps can find a second shift position where I can still be open in the mornings.

I have spent much of the weekend touching up my resume and browsing jobs on Monster.com and in the newspapers.  I knew that times were tough but I was amazed at the number of collections jobs that are available.  I don’t know that I am up for that after being on the receiving end of it for the last months.

Over the next week I need to do a few things to help me in my search,

I am also going to spend some time reading up on interviewing hints and techniques so that I can be better prepared for my interviews.   Interviewing is definitely my weakest point as they make me really nervous.

Have you looked for a job recently?  What challenges did you experience?

I just wanted to wish you good luck! Dont feel like you are giving up on your dream. This could be just a temporary thing. You just have to do what you have to do to keep your head above water. I just want to offer a piece of advice, dont settle for the first job that comes along, and make sure you find something rewarding, even if its just good relationships with co-workers.

I totally understand where you’re coming from. I quit my job to stay home with my baby and had plans on getting into real estate investing to allow me to stay home and it just didn’t work out as planned. I ended up working part time at a supermarket in the evenings and weekends so I could be home with my daughter during the day. I tried doing things and working from home but it just wasn’t working. If only I started my blog then. I would’ve had more time to work at it and such. Anyway, it got to the point that I HAD to go back to work full time.
Don’t be so hard on yourself. You have to do what you have to do.
What business are you referring to? Is it this blog?
It definitely isn’t easy blogging while working full time. I have to fit it in between work and family.
Wishing you all the best in your job hunt!!

Saph, I own a pet grooming business. I bought it in August and have been struggling to grow the business from part time to full time ever since. It’s growing a little every month but not quickly enough. As for this blog, it is more of an endeavor than a business. It makes very little if any income.

Good luck in finding a job. Hopefully you may still be able to run your business part time and if it builds up you coudl do it full time again. It must have been a really hard decision, I know that I would find it hard to give up my business after 5 years of hard work and low profits I still want to give it a chance to prove itself.

Are you getting a part time job? That should be able to give your business more time to grow to the point of the full time income you need. =) wishing you all the best!!!

If I can find a part time job that is close enough that it would actually be worthwhile to work, yes. If not, I am going to have to look for something full time. The problem is that I am a minimum of 25 miles from the closest large town. That makes it a 50 mile round trip. With gas being over $3 a gallon, it will cost me at least $6.50 to commute. When you subtract taxes and commuting expenses, it really doesn’t make it economically feasible to drive so far to work a few hours.

It woudl make more sense to do several full days a week rather than 5 half days, then the petrol cost would be lower. Telecommuting woudl of course be the best way, but it still does not seem to be an option for most companies unfortunately.
