IYM’s Envelope System Checkbook Register

If you are tempted by Dave Ramsey’s Envelope System but don’t want to carry your cash around in envelopes, try this spreadsheet. Michael at It’s Your Money has designed a really nifty Envelope System checkbook register. It does everything but smack you around for spending too much.

It’s one of those smart spreadsheets that has cute little envelope pictures that turn red if you spend too much out of that envelope. To cure being “in the red” you have to transfer money from some other envelope into that one. It always amazes me how smart excel spreadsheets can be. This one knows that if a transaction is marked as a transfer, it is just moving money between envelopes and it doesn’t change your register balance.

For me, the more work involved in keeping my budget balanced, the more likely I am to stay focused on it long enough to actually do it. I have multiple spreadsheets to track things and after trying the Envelope System register for a week, I think I like it. It’s got room for 20 odd envelopes (which I wouldn’t want to carry in my purse anyway) so you should have room for all those small accounts. Check it out and let me know what you think.
