MLM is like most other businesses. You get out of it what you put into it and it totally depends on what company it is. If all of the profit is in obtaining downlines and training, then you are right and it is difficult to succeed. However, in Shaklee the products are always the focus. The company spends millions in clinical studies and product improvements. I don't earn millions but I do earn an income from it and I have not sponsored anyone for years.

MLM is definitely a scam. Success rate is 0.06%. Talk to all those who dropped out, ask for info such as time used, amount spend, net profit, etc. The P&L is >99% loss. Money are made not from selling the products. Most of the money are from overiding commission from "sales" to downline distributors. In other words, the more downlines who are motivated, the more overiding commission. Hence there is more incentives to deceive (MLM people call it "recruit") more people into joining and continue to motivate them.

The millionaires uplines are the early signup and lived on the losses suffered by the downlines. This is MLM. Talk to your pastor, monk, guru and ask them if this is right.

Yes, it is evil. Oddly enough, I wrote this a post titled why network marketing is evil (http://www.bootstrappingindependence.com/bootstrapping/why-network-marketing-is-evil/)

Sure, you may find a rare few who make a profit, but is your $1k a month net expenses or just revenue? Most network marketers only report revenue and do not net expenses.

Also, tupperware, cutco etc are not generally considered network marketing/MLM companies because the focus is more on selling product then signing up new people to scam.

Great article! I agree with you about MLM. A lot of people think it is a scam but I believe it is a legitimate business. Thank you so much

You are so right. You do have to spend time to get good results. It's important to find one with a right price point that won't make people cringe when you tell them the cost.

I stumbled on one that worked well for me and am only doing it online. Since March I have established a monthly income of approx $600. It's growing each month. Don't know if I will hit $5000, but a few hundred bucks a month is nice.

I spend the most time testing different ads in Google Adwords.

Excellent information given by you, In my opinion network marketing can be defined as a business in which a distributor network is required to develop the business.

Slacker, I would agree with you that a lot of people get involved and don't make money. They end up quitting early. That's why I think it's really important that you use the products for awhile and make sure you think they are good value. I would also agree that there are some MLM scams out there.

But, you have to realize that network marketing is like any other business. There is a very high percentage of new businesses that fail within the first year for whatever reason. That doesn't make starting a business a bad idea. It just means that you should probably expect to not make a living from it for the first year or two.

I don't like MLM's. One of my friends is seems to always get caught up with one of these things and always tries to rope me in.

No matter what the pitch is it always ends up costing her money without her making any money.

So far she's done the travel agent thing, the beauty supply thing, the kitchen product thing, the automagic website thing, on and on.

Anytime the how's and why's about getting paid are complicated you should be wary. There is no get rich quick, just pyramids with a lot of people who will hold the empty bag at the end.

I think Network Marketing is a very legitimate form of business. It's just the bad experiences and a lack of understanding about the industry that leads to the bad taste in people mouths.

Network marketing truly has changed our lives. It has been a major blessing to our family. Now I know that isn't always the case. We went through quite a few negative experiences. But then have had the most wonderful experience.

As you say, the advertising medium is the people. I'd rather hear about something from a person I know and trust than a faceless corporation or advertisement. I think it is brilliant marketing.
