Some things just scream emergency (my storm door being ripped off it's hinges), other things~tough call.

If you use your computer as you said you do, business, web sites, etc, probably I'd call it an emergency. I've had a run of good luck with refurbished equipment (TV, GPS, a fax machine) recently.

That's a tough choice for sure. It sounds like a lot of what you do is based on the computer though, so it would be a good investment.

I haven't had to make a choice like that yet, good luck!

Pete, That's pretty much what I am looking for but it will still take a big chunk out of the fund. It is making me think twice about moving to the new shop. It's making me think twice about everything.

we had a clear cut emergency fund expense - a medical emergency. Computer I could see making a case for that - for sure. I think your idea of a used (or refurbished ?) computer is a good one. We bought our computer refurbished from dell for around $200. You may want to look into something like that.
