Converting Bugs Into A Delicious Meal

There are three steps to the process and it takes about 6 months from start to finish.  First you have to have a pretty good supply of bugs.  I live on a small farm and we have a ton of bugs such as ticks, grasshoppers, flys, etc.  It was trying to get rid of the ticks that originally gave me the idea.

Once you have the bugs, the next step is to find the bug converters.  I happened to find a guy selling them locally but some people order them off the internet.  It is pretty much like ordering anything.  You pay for them online and they mail them to you.  Usually when the post office gets them, they cause quite a stir and the Postmaster calls you to come and get them.

It takes the bug converters about 6 months to really start converting the bugs into something edible.  Until then, they just consume every bug they can find and grind them up.  The end result at this point is pretty much just fertilizer.

Once the bug converters have been processing bugs for about 6 months, you should start to see the results.  You will need to check around where you store the converters because sometimes the resulting packages are difficult to find.  If they are on a rack at night, you might look around the rack but sometimes it will be in the corner or even in a box.

Your bug converters may not be very consistent about it at first but check every day anyway.  It makes it fun to get your bug converters out since you never know what you might find.

It is better not to wash your results.  They come specially packaged with a natural antibiotic seal that keeps out bacteria and keeps them from evaporating.   Just wipe them off with a dry towel and put them in the refrigerator.

Eggs

It is hard to buy converted bugs in the grocery store.  Most of the converters were not fed bugs but chicken food that is made with antibiotics and other yucky stuff.  They are also anywhere from 30-60 days old.  Fresh converted bugs are much higher in Omega 3s and lower in fat and as an added bonus they taste much better.  Check at your local farmers market or call your county extension office to find your own.  They are usually less expensive, fresher and better for you than the store bought ones.

When you are ready for a delicious meal, just grab a few, wash them off and they are ready to be made into a variety of delicious meals.  You will be amazed at the difference in taste and texture from the ones that are made without bugs.  The following is my favorite recipe.  I make a bunch of these and freeze them.  To heat them up, wrap in a paper towel and microwave for 1.5 - 2 minutes.

Converted Bug Burritos

6 Eggs

¼ cup milk

½ pound Sausage

1 cup shredded cheese

Burrito wrappers

Brown sausage in skillet.  Whisk eggs and milk until frothy.  Take sausage out, pour off excess grease.  Add egg mixture to skillet and scramble to desired consistency.  Add Sausage back to skillet and mix with eggs.  Warm Burrito wrapper in microwave for about 10 seconds.  Spread ¼- ½  cup of the sausage & egg mix onto the center of the wrapper.  Sprinkle with cheese and wrap.  Put in ziplock bag and freeze or eat warm.

It started when my grandkids kept asking me what was for breakfast. I told them bugs… They loved it and ask for Bugs Breakfasts regularly.
