It’s Christmas time and I wanted to give my readers a special gift. I know that it’s a bit cold and wintery to be thinking about a garden but it’s my favorite way to beat the winter blues. I start thinking about what I want to grow in the garden and searching seed catalogs in January and especially this year when vegetable prices are so high. I was surprised to see how many vegetables I could start to plant on March 1st.

Garden Planner

This spreadsheet will help you determine when to plant which vegetables. You just enter the estimated last frost date for your area and it automatically calculates the dates that you should plant each vegetable. You can find your last frost date at your local extension office or you can check here for more general dates by states.

How Much Do I Need?

When I start purchasing seed for the garden, I am never really sure how much to buy or plant . I still have bean seeds from 3 years ago and luckily they still seem to germinate. I bought enough to feed the entire county. This automated spreadsheet makes it easy to estimate how much you really need. You simply plug in the number of people in your family and it will tell you how many 10 ft rows that you need to plant and how many ounces of seed or seedlings to buy.

Daily Snowflake of Savings – Save 10% on Gas

I am heading off to the big city tonight for my second therapeutic foster care class. It’s 140 miles round trip and kills my gas budget for the week so I was thinking about ways to save money on fuel. They tell me that you can save 10% of your gas by driving 10 miles an hour slower so if you normally drive 65, drive 55 and you will save 10%. This didn’t use to seem like a huge savings but at $3.20 a gallon and $55 to fill my tank, it works out to about $5.50 per tank. Here is the Dept of Energy’s Fuel Savings Website.

The Challenge today is to make your own bottled water. Companies have admitted that bottled water is no more than tap water in a bottle. Keep your bottles and reuse them. If you replace soda or bottled water with your own, you will save $1.30 and it’s kinder to the earth. If you drink 2 bottles a day, that’s $2.60 in savings.Send that $2.60 to pay down a debt or put it in your savings account.

Daily Flake – Week in review

Over the last week, I have listed seven different easy ways to save a dollar here and a dollar there. By taking the challenge each day here is what I saved:Coupons: $15.15 (my grocery store doubles coupons)
Packed lunch: $6.04
Carpool: $5.00
Bad Habit: $2.49
Sold $10.00
Picnic Dinner $5.00
Eat at Home: $10.00

Total: $53.68 in just 7 days!

If you send this to pay down one debt in addition to the regular payment that you send, you will reduce the principal by that much. If you do it every week, you will have paid an additional $200+ off your debt.
