I have been struggling with the concept of making money off this site. I really hate that the adsense ads are often for things that I would not recommend. This site is about getting out of debt but it’s not about paying someone to do that for you. Many of the sites that are advertised through adsense are for debt consolidation companies that charge an arm and half a leg for their services. I have even seen a link for the evil pay day loans.

However, the fact of the matter is that I need to make money. Anyone that has read my blog will understand that necessity so I have been experimenting with different forms of advertising. You will note the small Featured Blogs in the sidebar that each make a few cents a day. I would have to fill up the entire blog with ads to really make much of a difference.

I have considered a donation button or buy me a cup of coffee plug in but it just isn’t me to ask for donations.

I got an offer in my email from Yahoo a couple of weeks ago and put it in my check into file. I actually had some time today to take a look. They offer many services including personals, games, web hosting and their new search toolbar: Yahoo! Toolbar

I tried the tool bar out and I really like it. It integrates with several social media sites, it has links to all of my groups and My Yahoo page as well as mail. It also has a Yahoo search function. I have been getting quite a few visitors from Yahoo search lately so I know people are using it.

It’s free to download so it won’t cost you a penny and it will help to support Oh My Aching Debts. Give it a shot and see what you think. You can download it here: Yahoo! Toolbar or by clicking on the banner in the sidebar. I am also going to include a link in each post.

I am going to try it for a couple of weeks and see how it goes. Nothing would make me happier than to be able to eliminate the ads that I have no control over and that might lead my readers to a product that I would not recommend.

  1. I use Adsense and had the same concerns as you about the ad content. Just so you know, you can exclude the companies you don’t find appropriate. I can’t think of the exact wording but it’s something along the lines of filter competing websites. There’s even a plugin that will let you do it easily, should be linked from that page.

Good luck with the new toolbar ads. :)

  2. This sounds like a fantastic idea. In my experience it is always good to keep trying new things to make money from a blog as things change very quickly. Good luck with it.

  3. I hear you problem, I too see my ads and think Yikes! I have signed up with two affliates mainly because I can controll the content and the amount of good ads I get. I need the money, but the hard part is balance vs need. Good luck on the yahoo bar!
